Law Society Launches Model Policy on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity June 25, 2004 — The Law Society of Upper Canada marked Pride Week on June 25 by introducing a new model policy titled “Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity: Creating an Inclusive Work Environment.” The launch was part of the seventh annual public education forum and reception, which the society co-hosted in partnership with the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity committee (SOGIC) of the Ontario Bar Association. “We are pleased to introduce this model policy as a key access initiative that promotes equality in the work environment through employment practices and benefits for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and Two-Spirited individuals,” said Frank Marrocco, Law Society treasurer. “Law firms of all sizes, legal clinics and other employers may find this policy a useful tool.” The society developed the model policy as a guide to ensure equitable distribution of employment and pension benefits without discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. “The courts in Ontario have clearly recognized the equality rights of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, Two Spirited and transgender communities — it is very important that the legal profession know and understand these rights. The model policy will help lawyers and law firms provide the appropriate legal guidance to these communities,” Marrocco said. The Law Society has developed a series of best practices and model policies to guide lawyers and law firms in promoting equity and diversity in all areas of their practice, including employment and provision of services. Over the years the Law Society has created model policies on harassment and discrimination, accommodation practices, flexible work arrangements and employment equity.
